Intergenerational living: Building tight-knit communities.

The concept of intergenerational living is a model that addresses the diverse needs of the population by combining different types of housing. Families of all kinds find suitable spaces, solo students or roommates have functional units, and seniors enjoy comfortable, well-designed accommodations—all within the same residential complex.

Community

These buildings offer a more vibrant environment that facilitates interactions among residents of all ages, which is pre-ci-se-ly what we aim for in our projects. Enriching exchanges between the young and the elderly enhance the quality of life and foster better social cohesion.

In an era where individualism is on the rise, intergenerational living emerges as an innovative and caring solution that we particularly cherish. At Mellem, we understand that to build sustainable communities, we must first create spaces that encourage human interactions across all ages. Our projects are far from being just an assembly of housing units; they are designed as social microcosms where everyone, regardless of their background or daily routine, finds their place.

Imagine a neighbourhood where children play in a shared courtyard while grandparents sit on a bench to chat with students. Professionals returning from work can join a yoga session in the common relaxation room, while students prepare for their next exam in peaceful collaborative study spaces. This is not a distant dream; it’s a reality we are building every day, from studio apartments to 3-bedroom units.

The communities we build embody this vision of inclusive and connective living. Our projects offer a variety of common spaces designed to encourage dialogue and cooperation. Head over to Mellem Ville-Marie in Montreal: it features a large collaborative space adjacent to a café where tenants can meet to work, exchange ideas, or simply take a break together. This proximity between different age groups and backgrounds creates bridges, fostering interpersonal relationships that go well beyond mere cohabitation.

Continue the tour with the small community garden in the courtyard of Mellem Manoir-des-Trembles in Gatineau, where young and old can meet to garden together, exchange tips, and learn from one another. These green spaces are not just intended to beautify our projects; they are designed as meeting places where genuine and lasting bonds are formed, with BBQ evenings as a bonus!

And at Mellem Grace Dart, which will open by next spring in the east end of Montreal, the large rooftop terrace with its pool offering the best view in town will undoubtedly become a gathering place loved by all!

Our philosophy is based on a simple belief: individual and collective well-being stems from a rich and dynamic community life. Our projects are therefore designed to integrate this intergenerational dimension at the very heart of the residential experience. We know that when generations live together, they enrich each other.

A young adult helping a senior understand a new TikTok trend, or a retiree sharing life experience with a young family—these interactions strengthen the social fabric and create a powerful sense of belonging. We firmly believe that this generational mix is essential for building resilient and harmonious communities.

The Partage Club app, available to all our tenants, goes even further by facilitating the sharing of items between neighbours, thus creating a dynamic of mutual aid and solidarity. These initiatives are not just simple services but concrete ways to strengthen the bonds between generations. As we continue to develop our various projects, we remain driven by the same vision: to create spaces where everyone, regardless of age or background, can thrive fully. Because we know that the strongest communities are those where people take care of each other, where generations mix, support each other, and grow together.

This is the vision we carry every day for a future where intergenerational solidarity becomes the norm. Want to join us? Discover all our projects right here.
